Buying train tickets in the UK can sometimes be confusing. If you've ever found yourself at a ticket machine or online, unsure of which ticket to choose, you're not alone that's why we're here to help you distinguish between different ticket types such as Advance tickets, Anytime tickets, Peak and Off-Peak tickets, and more.

First Class train tickets

Return train tickets

Cheap train tickets
To secure cheaper train ticket offers and cut back on weekday spending, keep an eye on Advance ticket releases and regularly updated ticket offers and book as early as possible. Sometimes, booking two single tickets can be cheaper than a return ticket.

How much is an Advance ticket?
These are typically the cheapest options, especially if booked well in advance. Prices can start from as low as £10-£20 for longer journeys if booked early. However, prices can increase closer to the date of travel.
How much is an Anytime ticket?
These offer the most flexibility and can be used on any train at any time. Because of this flexibility, they tend to be the most expensive, often ranging from £50 to over £100 for long-distance journeys.
How much is an Off-Peak ticket?
These are cheaper than Anytime tickets but are restricted to travel during Off-Peak times. Prices vary, but they generally offer significant savings over anytime tickets. For example, an Off-Peak return ticket might cost between £30 and £70 for a medium to long-distance journey.
How much is a return ticket?
The cost of return tickets can vary; a Standard return ticket might cost between £30 and £80 for longer distances, while an open return, which offers more flexibility, can be more expensive.
How much is a First Class ticket?
These are more expensive than Standard Class tickets but offer extra amenities and comfort. Prices start from £70.
How much are railcards?
Holders of Railcards such as the Senior Railcard, and Family & Friends Railcard can get a third off most ticket prices, providing substantial savings on regular travel.

How to buy a train ticket online
To buy a train ticket online, start by selecting the 'Buy tickets' option on our website under the tickets tab.
Enter your departure and arrival stations, travel date, and time, and choose the type of ticket that best suits your needs—such as Advance for cheaper fares booked early, Anytime for flexibility, or Off-Peak for discounted travel during quieter periods.
Review the available train options and select the one that fits your schedule and budget. Input passenger details and apply any eligible discounts, such as Railcard savings.
Proceed to payment by entering your credit or debit card information, then confirm your booking.
How to use an e-ticket at the station
After payment, you’ll receive a confirmation with your e-ticket or a reference number for physical tickets. Ensure you access and keep your ticket handy, whether it’s a digital copy on your mobile device or a printed version for collection. You will need it to get through any barriers at the train station and to show it to the train conductor.
