Further urgent repairs are required overnight between Alexandra Palace and Stevenage via Hertford North following a landslip earlier this month. The line will need to be closed overnight and as a result late night and early morning services will be revised.
Disruption is expected until 05:30 tomorrow, Wednesday 28 February.
Customer advice:
Last week, initial repair works were completed after a landslip was found near the railway in the Cuffley area.
However, Network Rail have now found that further works are needed.
Tonight, 27 into 28 February, there will be an additional closure of the Great Northern route between Alexandra Palace and Stevenage via Hertford North. You can see if this is on your journey by using the live map here. Lines will be shut from 00:30 to 05:30, so this will affect late-night and early-morning trains.
Some Thameslink services will also be affected, and will not be able to run as planned between London and Stevenage. This is because they were due to use this route as a diversion. The normal route through Welwyn Garden City is also closed overnight, as there will be unrelated engineering works on these lines as well.
If you had been planning to travel during the closure, you will need to use an alternative train or replacement buses.
Buses are likely to take at least 30-60 minutes longer than making train journeys.
Journey planners are now up to date with train changes, and when buses are confirmed from suppliers, they will be added to the journey planners.
Can you tell me more about this?
On 13 February, a landslip was identified at Sopers Farm Viaduct, near Cuffley station. Overnight repair works were needed, which took place between 15 and 20 February. This landslip happened as a result of severe flooding in the area.
There is further information about how flooding impacts the railway here, and you can find out more about the way landslips affect the railway here.
It has continued to be safe for trains to run at a reduced speed, but further work needs to take place, as the ground in the area has continued to move following further wet weather.
Network Rail have been closely monitoring the issue and have now advised us that more work is needed tonight. As a result, we've had to make changes to services, and are working to provide replacement transport.
