A freight train has broken down between Chinley and Sheffield, blocking some lines. As a result, trains running between Stockport / Romiley and Sheffield may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.

Disruption is expected until 11:00.

What has happened?

There is a broken down freight train between Stockport and Sheffield. This is disrupting trains on the Liverpool Lime Street / Nottingham / Norwich route

Another train is en route to attach to the broken down freight train, this is expected to arrive on site at 09:30.

How does this affect my train?

Trains will be delayed between Stockport and Sheffield until the freight train is on the move.

Trains running through the area between Sheffield and Stockport are currently unaffected.

At present we are expecting the problem to be fixed in the next 2 hours. As soon as the problem is fixed the priority will be to get trains running to their advertised times again. We expect the advertised timetable to resume on the affected routes by 11:00

How do I get where I need to be?

East Midlands Railway have arranged for you to use tickets with the following train operators, please note this will add up to 60 minutes to your journey time.

  • London Northwestern Railway - from Liverpool Lime Street / Liverpool South Parkway via Stoke-on-Trent and Birmingham New Street, to then connect with services towards Derby and Nottingham
  • Avanti West Coast - between Warrington Bank Quay (short distance from Warrington Central) and Manchester via Stoke-on-Trent to then connect with services towards Derby and Nottingham
  • CrossCountry - you are able to use their services on any of their routes
  • Northern - between Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester via Leeds to Sheffield and also their services between Leeds and Nottingham
