A reduced Great Northern, Southern and Thameslink service is in operation tooday, due to a shortage of train crew.
Customer Advice
Like many other businesses across the country, Great Northern, Southern and Thameslink are experiencing increased staff sickness. This is due to coronavirus, the side effects from booster jabs, and seasonal illnesses. This means some services will have to cancelled or amended at short notice.
Journey Planners continue to be updated with the latest information, so please check the next departures before making your way to the station.
If trains are cancelled, alternative transport options will be very limited, particularly outside the London area. Should you be travelling this evening, we strongly recommend you leave extra time as you may need to wait longer for a train service, or we would advise you travelling earlier than you planned.
New Years Eve train service changes:
Southern:
- There will be cancellations on some coastal services to / from Littlehampton and Southampton / Portsmouth and also between Eastbourne and London Bridge
- For most journeys, there will be alternative Southern trains, but you may need to wait up to 30 minutes longer, and change between trains in some cases
Thameslink:
There will be cancellations on various routes, particularly on the below routes:
- Between Bedford and Brighton
- Between Luton and Sutton
- Between London Blackfriars and Sutton
- Between London and Three Bridges / Brighton
If you're planning on travelling after midnight, a limited service will be operating so we would strongly recommend you check before you travel.
Great Northern:
- There will be some cancellations between Stevenage, St Neots and Peterborough this evening.
- For most journeys, there will be alternative Thameslink and Great Northern trains, but you may need to wait slightly longer for these
Ticket acceptance on alternative routes at no extra cost:
To help you with your journey, you may use valid tickets on any Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink or Great Northern service on any reasonable route.
You may also use:
- Tube services on any reasonable route, to transfer between stations in the London area
- Brighton & Hove buses between Eastbourne, Lewes, Brighton and Shoreham-by-Sea
- TfL bus routes between Sutton, Wimbledon and East Croydon
Where possible, Great Northern, Southern and Thameslink are looking to source rail replacement buses, but these will be very limited. They will be advertised in journey planners as / when they are confirmed.
If you are at a station and you need further assistance in getting to your destination, please speak to station staff or press the green button on the Help Point to arrange onward travel.

Can you tell me more?
Great Northern, Southern and Thameslink service controllers and resourcing teams have been working hard to allocate crew to trains. They are also grateful to members of our frontline teams who are making additional efforts to get people moving. Unfortunately, there are still times when they will be unable to provide the planned train service. We are very sorry for the inconvenience.
Please help us keep you moving and stay safe when you are travelling. Check the live journey planners before you go to the station. If we have to advise you to consider another route, please see if this will get you to your destination.
Wearing a face covering is now mandatory - from when you enter the station to when you exit the station at your destination, unless you are exempt.
