"I feel I’m really doing something worthwhile"

Former building society worker-turned ceramic tiler, David Duncan has been into trains ever since he was a teenager in the 1950s. “I just love the railways,” he beams. Naturally, when he saw an advert in the Huddersfield Examiner for Grand Central ambassadors at Mirfield he was the first to apply.

Among other things, David helps make sure passengers are kept informed about train times and that they’re on the right trains. “It’s really helping me with something to do,” he says, “and one or two people have said that I seem a different person. The uniform really makes me feel important and I feel I am doing something worthwhile.”
