A road vehicle colliding with a bridge between London Bridge and New Cross Gate means that all lines are blocked. Trains running between these stations may be cancelled or delayed by up to 15 minutes.

Disruption is expected until 10:00.

Customer advice

You should allow extra time for your journey, which may take up to 30 minutes longer than expected. Some services may run non-stop between East Croydon and Blackfrairs, not calling at London Bridge.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

Shortly after 07:30 this morning, Thameslink received reports that a lorry had struck a bridge near to London Bridge. Network Rail response staff are enroute to check the bridge for damage, and are expected to arrive on site at around 08:00. Until that happens trains cannot run over some of the lines on the bridge.

Until this happens, some Thameslink services will divert via an alternative route between East Croydon and Blackfriars, and will not be able to call at London Bridge. This will add up to 30 minutes to their journey time.

When a motor vehicle collides with a railway bridge this is called a bridge ‘bash’ or 'strike'. Bridge strike incidents can be dangerous to both road and rail users. To allow Network Rail engineers to carry out extensive safety checks, the railway bridge is either temporarily closed or an emergency speed restriction is put in place. This can cause delays to both road users and rail passengers.

If you witness a bridge strike you should report it using the phone number on the identification plate fixed to the bridge. If no plate is provided you should report it to the Police by calling 999.
