A points failure at Barnham means some lines are blocked. As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised. This is expected until 21:00.

Customer Advice:

A points failure at Barnham is blocking the line between this station and Chichester, affecting the Portsmouth and Southampton routes. Because of this, Southern are having to reduce services in this area. Shuttle trains between Barnham and Bognor Regis will not run, but there will continue to be trains between London Victoria and Bognor Regis. We don't have an exact estimate for the delay to your journey at present, if you're travelling via Chichester. Ticket acceptance on other routes:

Your ticket will be accepted at no extra cost on:

  • South Western Railway services between:
    • Portsmouth Harbour and London Waterloo, via Basingstoke or Guildford
    • Southampton Central and Portsmouth Harbour
  • Great Western Railway services between:
    • Southampton Central and Portsmouth Harbour
    • Guildford and Gatwick Airport via Redhill
  • Stagecoach 500 buses between Littlehampton, Barnham and Chichester
  • Stagecoach 700 buses between Brighton, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis, Chichester and Portsmouth

Southern are working with Network Rail to deal with a points failure at Barnham. Response staff have been sent to site, and we are awaiting further updates. Points are moveable sections of track which can send trains onto different routes at junctions. These are part of the signalling system, generally managed by Network Rail. Points can stop moving correctly for a number of reasons. For example, there may be an obstruction in the moving parts, or the electronic control systems may have developed a fault. There are various backup systems which allow signallers to try to "set" the points, and in some cases, the points may be available for trains in one of the directions they serve, but not another.
