Can you tell me more about the incident?
Network Rail are investigating a signalling fault in the Mitcham area. Response staff are now on site.
The fault lies within the axle counter system. Axle counters measure the passage of trains over a given area. When they fail, it cannot be confirmed that a train has departed, allowing the next service to travel along that section of the line. This means that drivers have to stop and gain verbal permission to continue. They will usually then travel at slower speeds. This takes extra time, leading to delays and congestion.
