Following lightning damaging the signalling system earlier today between Cambridge and Ely lines have reopened. Trains running in the Cambridge and Ely area may continue to be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.

Major disruption is expected until 10:00.

East Midlands Railway

All trains can now run between Peterborough and Norwich The priority is to get trains running to their advertised times again. East Midlands Railway expect their advertised timetable to resume on the affected route by 10:00. How do I get where I need to be? You should continue to travel as originally planned however your journey may be delayed.

East Midlands Railway have arranged for a bus to depart Norwich at 08:56 calling at Thetford, Ely and Peterborough.

Greater Anglia

Train services affected are:

  • Cambridge to Norwich services
  • Cambridge to Ipswich services
  • Liverpool Street to Cambridge services

Great Northern Railway and CrossCountry services are also affected by this incident.

The signals have now been restored, however, train services may still be disrupted whilst Greater Anglia get the trains and train crew in place.

Great Northern and Thameslink

Trains can now run between Cambridge and Royston once more. There will still be delays, alterations and cancellations to some services whilst we work to get our crew and stock back to their timetables. You should allow an extra 20 minutes to complete your journey, and check station screens and planners for the latest information.

Ticket acceptance

  • Greater Anglia between Cambridge and London **please note, Greater Anglia are also affected by this incident so this is in place for when trains are able to run once more
  • Arriva Buses98 - between Hitchin and Baldock97 - between Hitchin and Letchworth
  • London Underground via any reasonable route

Can you tell me more about the incident?

We had been informed of a lightning strike on the overhead power lines between Royston and Littleport, shutting down the electricity supply, and closing all lines. An inspection has been carried out and all lines have been reopened.
