A fault with barriers at a level crossing at Berwick means trains have to run at reduced speed on all lines. As a result, trains running between Lewes and Polegate may be delayed.

Disruption is expected to continue until 14:30.

Customer Advice

Southern services between Lewes and Polegate may be delayed by a fault with the level crossing equipment at Berwick.

You can still use your normal route for your journey, but please leave around 15-20 minutes of extra time for your journey.

Late-running trains may be revised. This means they may not stop at all of the usual stations, or they may terminate part of the way along their usual routes.

As a result, you may need to change trains to get to your destination.

We'll be keeping our departure boards and station announcements up to date, so please keep an eye on the latest information when you're travelling. You can also see the next train from your station here.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

At around 13.15, we were advised of a problem with the barriers at a level crossing in the Berwick area. We have since been advised of further issues at Polegate, which are being investigated. These will cause delays to your journey between Eastbourne and Lewes.

Although there's a fault, Southern can still run your train, but it will take longer to get to your destination.

Trains will need to stop on the approach to the crossing, and drivers will then get verbal instructions to continue. They will travel at slower speeds so that they can see anything which may be obstructing them.

Southern are working closely with Network Rail to ensure the crossing is fixed and trains can return to their normal speeds as soon as possible.
