- Disruption between Hove / Brighton and Burgess Hill expected until 11:00
A signalling problem that needs to be investigated between Preston Park and Hassocks means trains have to run at reduced speeds. As a result, trains may be delayed by up to 10 minutes or revised.
Delays are expected until 11:00.
Customer Advice
Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express services are likely to have delays of around 10 minutes between Preston Park and Hassocks. This affects trains from Brighton or Littlehampton towards London.
Some Gatwick Express trains from London Victoria will finish their journeys at Haywards Heath, instead of continuing to Brighton.
These trains will then start their journeys back to London Victoria from either Haywards Heath or Gatwick Airport, meaning there will be some cancelled departures from Brighton.
This will mean there are fewer trains travelling through the area affected by the signalling issues. We expect this to reduce congestion.
If you were planning to use Gatwick Express services to or from Brighton or Haywards Heath, you can use Thameslink trains instead, at no extra cost. Please leave at least 20 minutes of extra time to use an alternative train. You may also need to change trains to get to your destination.

Can you tell me more about this?
We've had a report of a possible problem with the Automatic Warning System (AWS), which is part of the signalling equipment. This provides an audible and visible reminder within train cabs, giving drivers an extra alert about what the signal ahead is showing. This is particularly important when trains are travelling in restricted visibility, such as fog or snowfall, but the system is always active, keeping you safe during your journey.
The AWS equipment on the track comprises an electromagnet which is linked to the signal, and this magnet has two options. In one state, it reflects whether a signal is green, and in the other, it will show that the signal is at a more restrictive colour such as yellow or red, which would mean the driver has to take action to slow down or stop their train. The train has a receiver to read the state of the magnet, and this is then shown by the cab equipment.
Drivers have to acknowledge any warning which is given by this equipment, and if they don't react, the train will be brought to a stop. This adds an extra level of safety protection.
Railway signalling is designed to positively confirm that the track is clear before a train can proceed, and it works on "fail safe" principles. If there's a technical failure, the system should go into a more restrictive state, so that trains can be slowed or stopped in case there is an obstruction ahead. In this case, the AWS equipment has a fault, and this is not happening correctly. As a further line of protection, train drivers will need to stop and get verbal advice before proceeding into the area with the problem. This will cause some delays, but it's a necessary precaution.
Network Rail manage the AWS as part of the overall signalling system and will be investigating where the fault lies. We're working with them to ensure we can run our planned timetable, and we'd like to thank you for your patience during the delays in the area.
We have also been advised that trains are likely to have some further delays due to a fault with a signal in this area. In this case, the signal has been reported to be switching rapidly between different colours and not showing a steady indication to drivers. This means drivers have to stop at the preceding signal and gain verbal instructions to continue. Your journey will unfortunately take longer as a result.
Railway signals are designed to warn drivers that they have to stop because the system can't yet confirm that the route ahead is clear. In most places, the signalling system will show a green light, or aspect, when the track is clear for a long distance ahead, and drivers will then be shown one or two yellow lights to warn them when they are approaching a red signal. This means that they can anticipate the amount of braking that's required to stop before they reach another train or any form of problem on the line. In this case, as the signal isn't reliably showing the necessary indications to drivers, they'll need to take extra safety precautions to travel through the area.
The signalling system is maintained by Network Rail, and we're working closely with them to diagnose the fault and make sure it is fixed as quickly as possible.

- Delays between Lockerbie and Carlisle expected until 10:30
A fault with the signalling system between Lockerbie and Carlisle means trains have to run at reduced speed on the line towards Carlisle.
- Disruption through Welwyn Garden City expected until 12:00
A points failure at Welwyn Garden City means some lines are blocked. As a result of this, trains running through this station may be cancelled, delayed or revised.
Disruption is expected until 12:00.
Customer Advice:
A points failure is disrupting Thameslink and Great Northern trains via Welwyn Garden City station.
This means that the following trains may be delayed:
- Stopping services on the route between Moorgate and Welwyn Garden City
- Northbound stopping services from London Kings Cross towards Letchworth Garden City or Cambridge
Please leave around 20 minutes of extra time for your journey.
Some late-running trains may need to be revised to stop at fewer stations en route. Please listen to announcements and check station screens when travelling.
There may also be a small number of cancellations.
Alternative journey options:
For some journeys, you may wish to consider using another route, if there's a long wait until the next train.
You can use your ticket at no extra cost on:
- London Underground services on any reasonable route between North London and Central London, including the Northern and Piccadilly Lines
- London Buses serving stations between Potters Bar and Central London
You can also use your ticket interchangeably between Thameslink and Great Northern.
Planning your journey:
You can check train departures from your station here:
You can view live maps of the network here:
You can also see the alternative route guides here:
If you're travelling in the London area, you can plan journeys on alternative routes by using the TfL Journey Planner here.
Can you tell me more about the incident?
A points failure has been reported, and this is preventing trains from travelling on the line through Platform 4 at Welwyn Garden City station.
Points are moveable sections of track which can send trains onto different routes at junctions. These are part of the signalling system, generally managed by Network Rail.
Points can stop moving correctly for a number of reasons. For example, there may be an obstruction in the moving parts, or the electronic control systems may have developed a fault.
There are various backup systems which allow signallers to try to "set" the points, and in some cases, the points may be available for trains in one of the directions they serve, but not another.
Network Rail will send their specialist Signalling & Telecoms teams to site, and they will set up a safe method of working on the track. To allow staff to access the railway, sometimes we have to stop trains completely, which can lead to trains on other routes also being held at stations or signals.
As soon as it's safe to go on the line, the staff will diagnose the fault and find any quick solutions to resolve it.
Whilst this is being done, we will be monitoring progress closely. At times, replacement parts may be needed, or specialist advice from suppliers, which is why some points failures take longer to resolve than others.

Can you tell me more about this?
Staff are doing everything they can to keep trains moving, but we need to advise you that your journey could be affected. If there are any further details, updates will be posted on this page.
You can also see advice from the Met Office here.
Heavy rain can cause a number of problems for railway infrastructure. If floods occur and the water is fast-moving, it can dislodge the ballast which supports the track. Ballast is the term we use for the small granite stones which you see under the rails. As ballast is used to ensure the railway track has a stable base, it's important that it's in a safe condition.
There are also potential issues for the electric third rail which powers many of our trains, as well as the signalling system.
To help reduce disruption caused by flooding, we work with Network Rail to ensure pumps and flood barriers are in place, and we also jointly plan for the impact of severe weather. Our control room staff monitor reports of excess water and ensure staff are sent to deal with this is as quickly as possible.
Strong winds cause a number of issues for the railway. Our routes are lined by huge numbers of trees, and although these are regularly assessed, even one tree can cause significant disruption when it falls onto the track. Specialist teams will need to attend and make sure it is removed, and that any other nearby trees have not been affected.
We also experience debris being blown onto the line, often from surrounding properties. We encourage all our neighbours to make sure their property is safe and secure, so that it doesn't end up on the track, where it's likely to be damaged. Again, in these cases, staff will attend and make sure the railway is clear.
Speed restrictions may be put in place to allow drivers to stop in time, should there be obstructions on the railway. On routes with overhead wires, these may also be affected by high wind speeds. Your journey may be delayed, as this means the network has lower capacity, because trains take longer to travel along each section of track.
