Formed in 2000, Grand Central has been seeking to operate “open access” rail services for some time.
After being, unsuccessful with an initial application in 2003 to operate services across the North of England, from Newcastle to Manchester via the Calder Valley, Grand Central re-evaluated the changing requirements and criteria and submitted a detailed and ultimately successful application in 2005 to start services on the Durham Coast between Sunderland and London Kings Cross.
Grand Central is also planning to bring direct London services to West Yorkshire, with sister company Grand Union looking to develop those further.
Giles Fearnley – Chairman

Giles Fearnley has 35 years experience in the passenger transport industry, spanning both rail and bus. Having been one of the founders of Prism Rail PLC he then led that group as Chief Executive from its formation through to its sale to National Express PLC in 2000. Prism Rail operated four of the UK’s passenger rail franchises- WAGN, C2C, Wales & West and Valley Lines. Giles additionally served as Chairman of ATOC in 1999 and 2000. On the bus side Giles led a management buy-out of Blazefield Holdings in 1991 encompassing a portfolio of bus businesses across Yorkshire and Lancashire. Having sold the group to Transdev PLC in early 2006, he remains as its Chief Executive. Giles is additionally Non-Executive Deputy Chairman of the German bus and rail operator, Abellio GmbH and Senior Vice-President of the Confederation of Passenger Transport. |
Tom Clift - Managing Director

Tom is essentially a 'generalist' within the rail industry with 35 years experience. Most recently Tom has undertaken fleet project work, prior to which he was involved in franchise bidding / investigation teams in Northern Europe (including the UK).Between 1994 & 2003 he undertook leadership roles within Valley Lines in South Wales including being Managing Director from 1997 to 2001. During Tom's stewardship there was a transformation of the services provided including better punctuality & major investment in trains & stations. Within BR, Tom held a variety of roles in Operations, Business Management & Resources Planning. Tom has a degree in Business Studies with Transport Economics & is a long standing supporter of Sheffield United FC as well as Caerphilly RFC. |
Sean English - Operations Director

Sean joined Grand Central from Fraser Eagle Group where he was General Manager Strategy working within their Commercial team having previously managed the planning and performance elements of their business. Sean has over 16 years rail experience having worked in various senior Customer Service and Operational roles on the East Coast Main Line. |
David Lowrie – Finance Director

David joined Grand Central from Virgin Rail Group where he created the bid team for the New Cross Country Franchise. A qualified Chartered Accountant, David (aged 41) first joined the railway industry in 1997, when he was appointed Group Financial Controller at Prism Rail PLC, whose Chief Executive was Giles Fearnley, now Chairman of Grand Central. In 1999 David became Finance Director of Prism’s Cardiff based operating companies and following the takeover of Prism by National Express in 2000, he oversaw the creation of the Wales & Borders and Wessex Trains franchises. This saw him leading contract negotiations which restored the two businesses to profitability and which led to them achieving some of the greatest operating improvements of any UK train operators. David also acted as interim Finance Director at another National Express franchise, Central Trains. |
Peter Smith – Safety Manager

Peter joined Grand Central in October 2006 having served 30 years in the rail industry. Originally from the south west of England Peter moved to Leeds where he joined British Rail at Leeds City station. Peter has filled various roles during his career including station supervisor operating/commercial instructor, freight services manager safety standards & compliance manager and operations director. In recent years since the privatisation of the railways, Peter has worked extensively with safety management systems and Railway Safety Cases, and was responsible for achieving approval of the Grand Central Safety Case. Peter is now responsible for the maintenance of the Grand Central Safety Management System following it's acceptance by the ORR in March 2007. |
